We’re continuing our Getting to Know Our Suppliers series by taking a closer look at Ornamin, a family business that has designed and manufactured tableware in Germany for more than 70 years.
From specially designed mugs and plates to bowls and cutlery, Ornamin’s products are created with everyday usability and independence in mind, helping people of all ages and abilities enjoy eating and drinking in ways that work for them. Its approach combines practical design with familiar, discreet tableware that feels at home on any dining table.
We caught up with the ORNAMIN team to find out more about the company, its history, what inspired its approach to tableware and what makes its products different.
Where is Ornamin from? Where was the company born?
Ornamin is based in Minden, Germany and has been in business since 1955. Our UK daughter company, Ornamin Ltd, has just celebrated its 10th birthday!
What got you into the Tableware Product Business?
Ornamin has always been very in touch with what is needed at that current time.
For example, one of our most popular products used to be ashtrays!
This is no longer in demand, so we have adapted to the needs of families, inclusion of all, young, old or disabled, and we have always wanted to ‘bring everyone to the table’.
If you were a first-time customer, which Ornamin product would you buy and why?
Probably the Mug with Internal Cone, but I would choose a tight-fitting, discreet lid too, for an elderly relative.
It is lightweight, sturdy, and they wouldn’t have to lift their arm too high or tip their head back too far.
This can help them enjoy drinks by themselves again, safely and with no need to be fed by a carer.
This Mug features an internal cone that gets narrower towards the bottom and means the user can have a drink without having to lean their head back. It is very useful for those people with limited movement of the neck or people who are confined to a bed.
